Common FAQS

How frequently should I water my lawn?

You should water your lawn 2-3 times per week, providing approximately 1 & ½ inches of water each week. This should moisten the soil down to about 6 inches – the depth of a healthy root system.

How often should I mow my lawn?

The rate of grass growth and the desired height of your lawn should determine how often to mow. Generally speaking, during the regular growing season, once a week should be sufficient to promote a green, healthy lawn. As the weather turns colder, once every two weeks should suffice.

What's the best height for my mower when mowing my lawn?

In the spring, you should set your mowing height to 3 inches and try not to cut off more than ⅓ of the grass blade with each mowing. For the best results, keep your mower blade sharp.

When is the best time to fertilize my lawn?

For optimal results, you should fertilize your lawn heavily in the fall and lightly in the early spring. Whether you use slow- or quick-release fertilizer, make sure that you apply it well before summer temperatures reach their peak.

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a process whereby grass seed, water, fertilizer, wood fiber mulch, and a glue-like binder (to keep the mixture in place) are mixed together and applied over the prepared ground in one application. Because hydro seed fibers can retain up to 10 times their weight in water, seeds are kept moist, and the result is a quicker and thicker grass stand.

How do I know if I have grubs?

If you see brown patches in your lawn, go to the green grass around the edges and pull it up. If it pulls up like a piece of carpet, it’s likely you have grubs. You may see them in the soil, as well. They are small and white.

When is the best time to water my lawn?

The best time to water your lawn is before 10:00 am. Cooler temperatures and less wind help prevent fast evaporation, and morning watering helps keep your lawn cooler in the hottest part of the day. Evening is not a good time because the grass will stay wet throughout the night and be more susceptible to disease.

Should I use granular or liquid fertilizer?

Granular fertilizer releases its nutrients slowly into the soil when you water your lawn or when it rains. Liquid fertilizer releases nutrients more rapidly, but needs to be applied more often. Liquid fertilizers produce a lush, green appearance more quickly, but does so at the sake of root growth. Slow release granular fertilizer produces greater long-term results.

Should I collect clippings or mulch?

In most cases, it’s best to leave your clippings on the lawn to recycle them. As they decompose, they release nutrients and water back into the soil that feeds your grass and helps it grow thicker, healthier, and greener.

How do I treat doggy brown spots?

A simple, natural way to repair the brown spots on your lawn from your dog’s urine is to dissolve a cup of baking soda in a gallon of water and pour it on the affected spot. The baking soda neutralizes the high nitrogen content in canine urine. It will neutralize the odor as well, so your dog won’t be drawn there again.
